Content Management (Systems)

steering

A Content Management System (CMS) is basically a program used to create a framework for the content of your Website. Once setup correctly, content can be changed easily via a web browser, much like editing a word document.

There are pros and cons to a CMS that need to be considered :

  • COSTS : There is generally a higher initial cost in setting up a CMS as apposed to a static site. If you need content changed frequently, the initial extra spend can soon be negated.
  • WHOM: If you are not using a web person to do the updates who will do the changes? Often companies neglect to consider the time involved. Often small business owners are to busy running their businesses to make time for updates.
  • HOW : Depending on the type of CMS you decide on, there are varying levels of complexity and associated learning curve which involves differing degrees of training.
  • WHAT : How much of your sites content do you want or need control over? You may only need to update a few lines on the home page or dates for upcomming events etc and not the ability to rebuild the entire site. Choose a CMS that is right for you and your needs.

We divide Content management into 3 types.

  • Deligated: Here a site is designed and put live. All control over content changes are deligated to a web person on your behalf. This can be a very cost effective solution for companies who need to simply have a web presence with information about who they are, thier offerings and how they can be contacted. Content changes infrequently and if it does it requires small and non structural changes.
  • Partial: In this instance the changing of your online content is restricted to a specific area of the site.
  • Total: Pretty much all of the content and structure of your site is controlled by yourself.

We have seen many different types of CMS's over the years and all have good points, but some have serious flaws and drawbacks.

Points to consider when deciding on a fully blown CMS:

  • Costs : We use existing open source solutions so your money is spent in customising not licence fees.
  • Security: Always consider the importance of security
  • Granularity: Control over who is allowed to change what (roles) and if approval is required befor new content is published
  • Complexity:How difficult is it to effect changes? Do you need training to do this and will this incur extra costs?
  • Standards:Does the CMS of choice render according to current web standards, if not will it look and behave as planned accress all major browsers.
  • Lock in: Do you have to pay ongoing fees for your CMS and remain with their ISP?

We will gladly discuss your needs and an appropriate solution that is right for you.
